Two near me are having the underground tanks replaced. Massive task - it
must cost a fortune.

What is the life? Are they replaced on a Time Expired basis - or does an
inspection reveal the need?

Many older oil tanks leak eventually.
Not sure what to tell you for life expectancy of any one tank, or tank
company product.
Sometimes the fittings go bad, and not necessarily the tank.
An inspection of the surrounding soil, and any oil contamination is an
indication of a leak either the tank, or the fittings.
On 2 such known occasions, one fellows tank leaked for years.
Finally, they had to go under his house with a small excavator......yes,
drive under it, take out the soil, and replace it with a slurry of sand
and concrete to get back stability.
On another occasion, an older Post Office in McLouds Calif. had copper oil
lines laying on the ground under the old building.
It was determined that the soil eroded the copper lines, and the heating
fuel leaked under the entire building.
It too had to be excavated...

Sorry for the long note, but this is just 2 of probably many underground
storage tanks for fuel, that leak.
